US backed iraq in the Iran-iraq war , to topple khomeneni. becuase Iran overthrew the US favored shah and also Iran was planning to make Shia a majority in iraq which Saddam didn’t like it, as iraq was sunni dominated. initally US involvement is more of let iraq and iran die in this fight. US is not Iraqi favored, US knows saddam is bad but US anyway wanted iraq and Saddam to win. US was like they can use saddam
What is important to understand is that saddam when he was at the height of his brutality and using chemical weapons supported by the US in fact Reagan administration lifted iraq name from the state sponsors of terrorism so that US can supply weapons to iraq like attack helicopters sold to iraq was used to do gasing attack on Kurds. Anybody who supports islamic prosper is an enemy to US. It was like that, this is also why US did all shit things with saddam, befriended him, supported his dictatorship (in 1980’s)

US didn’t completely remove saddam from power, they could have overthrown his power if they wanted to but. Because he is the one who can fight against islam revolution. Slowly, US govt started planning to put a new govt in iraq by removing saddam, saying that he has weapons of mass destruction, feeding terroists .. etc.., there was little information on theses however plans were going effectively. then 9/11 attacks happened and finally. US then attacked full fledge iraq in 2003 – Saddam hussein. Neither saudi nor iran wanted it. US toppled iraq and sent Paul Bremer – Wikipedia. He put some policy where everyone who are in Ba’ath party (saddam govt) won’t serve anymore… the thing is , even if you hated saddam, you were a part of Ba’ath party otherwise you are screwed and because of that policy, almost 250k soldiers were fired overnight and they are unemployed cos they server Ba’ath party.. and this actually helped the sunni and even the Shia’s to unite and fight against the US, this is also how the iraq insurgency came in to picture. Cos in 2008 Obama campaigned that he was against the iraq war and promised he will pull us troops out. 2011 us came back.
After Saddam give toppled, sunni military (received weapons from saudi) and Shia military (received weapons from iran) saw opprtunity to siege power in iraq which lead to civil war in iraq. Iran is very anti-status quo power
And saudi people also got inspired with pro democracy, anti monarchy protests in 2011. Saudi obviously didn’t want this as they are secloratic, autocratic, monarchy govt.
Iranian military is fighting Side by side with militia, some of the extremist groups like hezbolla, in support of dictator, bashar president of syria. They are fighiting against sunni groups ( there is a terroist group who are also sunni, that’s ISIS – who are also military emerged from iraq after Saddam downfall. ISIS is there in syria and iraq). as of 2021, ISIS is largely defeated in iraq and syria and saudi and iran are slowly trying to take control . Saudi supports sunni military not terrorist groups
